The ABCs of Race-Conscious Parenting
Join us for a new 4-part workshop for parents/guardians of children four years and younger. Jacqueline Nelson, former kindergarten teacher, DEIB educator, and mom of a two year old, will create connections and community for families with young children and teach the group how to talk about race with each other and with their children. Below is the schedule of the four sessions.
9 February 2022, 12-1PM ET
Here & Now: What Does the Research Tell Us?
After a brief discussion and consideration of the current socio-political climate, with a focus on education, the group will be presented with a well-rounded, research-based rationale that supports the cause for early intervention against pre-prejudice & racial bias.
8 March 2022, 12-1PM ET
Looking Back & Forward: Understanding Racial Identity Development & Our Own
To fully appreciate how we come to internalize and enact racial biases, the group will learn and review the various frameworks for racial identity development. Together, the group will reflect and discuss certain aspects of their own racial identity development journey to assess their own biases and where they might reinforce or reimagine their parenting approach.
11 April 2022, 12-1PM ET
Practical Practice: Scenarios & Strategies for Talking with Young Children
To develop race-conscious parenting habits, the group will be given a few scenarios to practice and apply new language and learnings. For each scenario, the group will review effective strategies for intervening, redirecting, and educating their young children.
18 May 2022, 12-1PM ET
Communal Conversation: How Are We Doing? What's Working? What's Challenging? What's Missing?
The group will be invited to share what's been working well and what's been particularly challenging for them as they attempt to apply new racial literacy strategies with their children and families.
The registration fee for all four sessions is $350 or you can sign up for one session at $95 each.
