Mind the Gap - The Bridge Between DEIB and Advancement

Does the advancement office often feel disconnected from the overall DEIB efforts of your school? Unfortunately, advancement teams are often reluctantly trailing the work instead of leading it. Independent schools must recognize the opportunity to bridge their commitment to DEIB with the work of advancement (fundraising, communications, alumni relations and events). Broader DEIB initiatives will likely be unsuccessful if we allow advancement offices to “opt out” of the substantive work to improve diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in independent schools.
David Smith, Director of Advancement at Saint Ann’s School, will share how to build greater connections between DEIB and advancement and how to elevate the cultural competency of your advancement operation.

- Design a special events calendar that encourages belonging and community building
- Promote greater inclusion across various constituencies
- Elevate BiPoc voices in your community
- Disrupt the fundraising traditions that serve to exclude people and center wealth
David Smith has led development and advancement offices at independent schools for thirteen years, helping schools raise over $100 million. He started his career as a history and government teacher in public and independent schools. David currently serves on the faculty of the CASE School Advancement Institute and CASE Fundraising for New Heads. He is the founder of David Smith Consulting and helps schools improve their advancement operations.
