As the upcoming NYC mayoral election stirs strong feelings on issues of identity, representation, and justice—including Muslim visibility, antisemitism, and progressive values—students in grades 7–12 are likely to engage in passionate, and sometimes polarized, conversations across school settings. Educators will encounter these discussions in hallways, classrooms, advisories, and team practices—and must be prepared to respond with steadiness, care, and clarity.

This one-hour virtual session equips independent school educators with tools to navigate student political dialogue with nuance and confidence. Together, we will explore how to:

• Recognize the impact of broader socio-political tensions on school culture and student identity
• Model grounded, respectful disagreement as adults in the community
• Distinguish between healthy civic engagement and harmful or exclusionary speech
• Intervene constructively when conversations become charged or unsafe
• Cultivate classroom and advisory norms that foster dignity, empathy, and critical thinking

Faculty and staff will leave with strategies, scripts, and reflection prompts to support student belonging and engagement during politically fraught times—while protecting the learning environment for all.
