In this workshop, Monique Vogelsang  –– lead developer of Pollyanna’s Racial Literacy Curriculum –– will review the essential questions: What is race? What is racism? And what is its impact in U.S. society? We will review the social construct of race, including a discussion of both the biological fallacy of race and the social truth and power of race, as well as the creation and reinforcement of systemic racism. Discussing the historical context of both race and racism in the United States will support our understanding of how a powerful social construct like race, and a collection of policies that deny equal access to opportunity along lines of race have informed our current society, including our educational system. Employing a nuanced lens, we will also explore how race is also an essential aspect of our intersectional identities. Our goal is to better understand and (re)envision current society with an informed growth mindset, or a perspective that is at once representative, inclusive, and fosters a sense of urgency and belonging.

The Zoom room will open at 12:45PM ET. We will begin at 1:00PM ET and run until 2:30PM ET.
