When Kindness Isn't Prioritized, the Cost Is High

As we reach a moment in the year when reflection and connection are encouraged, many of us are reminded of the role kindness plays in our shared spaces.

But in schools where supportive and respectful interactions are inconsistent or don’t exist at all, something else fills the space instead: disconnection, dismissal, and unkindness.

Schools don’t fall apart overnight.
They erode — one unkind moment at a time.

Students Carry the Weight

  • Bullying becomes normal
  • Anxiety spikes
  • Confidence collapses
  • Students retreat to protect themselves

This is what school feels like when emotional safety isn’t a priority.

Community Fractures

  • Friendships fade
  • Cliques harden
  • Empathy drains
  • Tension rises

Without kindness, connection doesn’t stand a chance.

Learning Takes the Hit

  • Engagement drops
  • Focus slips
  • Attendance declines
  • Achievement falls

Students cannot learn where they do not feel valued.

Culture Turns Toxic

  • Burnout accelerates
  • Trust breaks
  • Collaboration disappears
  • The entire environment suffers

A school without kindness becomes a school without stability.

And the Harm Doesn't Stay in School

It follows students into adulthood, shaping how they relate, lead, work, and connect.

Why We're Naming This

Because kindness isn’t soft.
Kindness is structure.
Kindness is safety.
Kindness is essential.

A Moment for Recommitment

As many of us pause and reflect this week, we can also look ahead and imagine schools where kindness is a daily practice, not a hopeful ideal.

This is the moment to recommit to the kind of school communities our students deserve.

Join us in January at the Pollyanna National Conference to prioritize kindness in 2026. 4 spots left!

HIGHLIGHTED WORKSHOP

Ali Michael - "Keeping Conflict Healthy: A Generative Friction"

Conflict in schools is inevitable and it can be a powerful catalyst for growth. When addressed with care, it deepens understanding, strengthens relationships, and reinforces community values. This workshop invites participants to explore how conflict can remain healthy rather than become polarized or entrenched. Together, we’ll unpack strategies for personal accountability, including receiving feedback as a gift and managing forms of identity threat. Through case studies and shared reflection, participants will practice moving through tension with empathy and curiosity, and brainstorm approaches to common school-wide challenges with an eye toward connection, repair, and resilience.
